How to Measure (Navy Method)
The U.S. Navy body fat formula uses circumference measurements to estimate fat percentage. Here’s how to measure accurately:
- Height — stand straight, measure without shoes
- Neck — just below the larynx (Adam’s apple), tape slightly downward sloping
- Waist (men) — measure at the navel
- Waist (women) — measure at the narrowest point
- Hip (women only) — widest point around the buttocks
Navy Formula
Men: BF% = 495 / (1.0324 − 0.19077×log₁₀(waist−neck) + 0.15456×log₁₀(height)) − 450
Women: BF% = 495 / (1.29579 − 0.35004×log₁₀(waist+hip−neck) + 0.22100×log₁₀(height)) − 450
Note: all measurements must be in inches for the formula to work correctly.
