How to Calculate Work Hours

This calculator determines your paid work hours by subtracting your break time from the total time between clock-in and clock-out.

The formula

Paid Hours = (Clock Out − Clock In) − Break Time

Step-by-step

1. Enter your clock-in time (e.g., 08:00).
2. Enter your clock-out time (e.g., 17:00).
3. Enter your break duration in minutes (e.g., 30).
4. The calculator shows your total paid hours.

Worked example

Clock in at 8:00 AM, clock out at 5:00 PM, 30-minute break. Total elapsed = 9 hours. Paid hours = 9 − 0.5 = 8.5 hours.

Handling overnight shifts

If clock-out is earlier than clock-in (e.g., 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM), the calculator automatically adds 24 hours to account for the overnight shift.
