How to Calculate Your Net Worth

Your net worth is the single best snapshot of your financial health. It is everything you own minus everything you owe.

The formula

Net Worth = Total Assets − Total Liabilities

Step-by-step

  1. List all assets: cash, savings, investments, retirement accounts, home value, vehicle values, and any other valuable possessions.
  2. List all liabilities: mortgage balance, car loan, student loans, credit card debt, personal loans, and any other money owed.
  3. Subtract total liabilities from total assets.

Worked example

Assets: ,000 savings + ,000 retirement + 0,000 home = 0,000. Liabilities: 0,000 mortgage + ,000 car loan + ,000 credit cards = 0,000. Net worth = 0,000.

Why track net worth?

Track it annually to see if you are moving forward. A negative net worth means you owe more than you own. Growing net worth signals financial progress even if income fluctuates.
